Apostille in the Russian Federation
Planning to use Russian documents abroad—for study, work, marriage, immigration or any other purpose? In most cases you will have to legalise them, and the fastest route is an apostille.
What is an apostille?
An apostille is a standardised stamp that verifies the signature, the capacity of the signatory and the seal on a Russian public document. It is recognised by every country that has acceded to the Hague Convention of 5 October 1961 and replaces the multi-step consular-legalisation chain with a single certificate.
Documents that can be apostilled
- Education records (school-leaving certificates, diplomas, academic transcripts)
- Civil-status certificates (birth, marriage, divorce, death)
- Notarial acts (powers of attorney, consent letters, notarised copies & translations)
- Court rulings and court-issued certificates
- Documents issued by federal agencies (licences, certificates, extracts, etc.)
Not apostilled: passports, driving licences, bank statements or any paper issued by a private company.
Who issues the apostille in Russia?
- Ministry of Education & Science – for educational documents
- Ministry of Justice – for notarial acts and civil-status certificates
- Courts – for judicial documents
- Ministry of Internal Affairs, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Labour, etc. – for certificates they issue
- MFC (“My Documents”) centres – accept applications in many regions
- Gosuslugi portal – online submission where available
When do you need it?
- Applying to a foreign university
- Registering a marriage outside Russia
- Obtaining permanent residence or citizenship
- Taking up employment overseas
- Confirming professional qualifications abroad
Important: an apostille is valid only in Hague-Convention countries. For non-member states, consular legalisation is still required.
