- Legalization at the Italian Embassy
Legalization at the Italian Embassy
If you plan to use Belarusian documents in Italy—for study, employment, marriage, a residence permit or citizenship—you may first have to legalise them. Depending on the type of document and the requirements of the Italian authority, this will be either an apostille or consular legalisation at the Embassy of Italy in Minsk.
What is legalisation?
Legalisation is the procedure that confirms the authenticity of an official document issued in one country so that it can be accepted in another. It certifies that the document was issued by a competent authority and bears a valid signature and seal.
Because both Italy and Belarus are parties to the 1961 Hague Convention, an apostille is sufficient in most cases. However, some Italian offices may still ask for additional consular legalisation.
When is Embassy legalisation required?
- The document cannot be apostilled (e.g. commercial papers, certificates from private organisations).
- A specific Italian authority does not recognise the apostille (rare, but possible).
- The translation into Italian must be sworn before the consulate.
- The document was issued in a non-Hague country (then legalisation is done through the Italian consulate in that country).
Always check the exact requirements with the Italian prefecture, university, employer or other institution before you apply.
